arena4 - Across the board... One of the obvious secrets to culturing talented athletes is teaching our youth, not only how to play the game, but how to enjoy playing the game as well. Listen up! This is done by reducing the fear of failure and instilling self challenge into an inexperienced athlete. Simply said, this is one of the fastest ways to individual improvement.
Fear of failure and a lack of self confidence is clearly the number one reason why a kid will not improve and eventually quit playing sports. This is followed only by kids with physical limitations.
Think about the last time you came across a play yard of young kids playing without the influence of adults interfering. The kid having the most fun on the field is usually the best player out there. With no adult coaching, it's the kid with the most confidence or rather the least fear that usually has the best skills. This kid is considered the one with the most natural talent.
Real talent starts with an internal desire to win. With this desire comes energy, drive and a strong personal motive. Now combine this kid with two or three other kids with that same confidence, or least amount of fear, and we have the benefit of a group of talented kids naturally increasing their own effort and building on each others skills while just doing what kids do... Playing and having fun! Combine this with a coach who can recognize individual strengths and chances are this coach has one solid team.
University of Arizona Head Softball Coach Mike Candrea states that, "Studies show that teaching young people to focus on effort rather than ability helps make them high achievers and competitors in school, on the field and in life! As coaches, we must do our part to emphasize attitude and effort – two elements that we have control over each and every day and will largely influence our success in life."
Therefore, as the individual skill level increase's in all our players, so will a natural desire to win creating a more competitive environment across the board.
